Gen 2 definitely wins first place for me, it keeps a simple pixel styled look which is fitting, a huge improvement from gen 1 not all but a huge amount and giving the games a unique sprite is definitely a nice touch looking at it now. It all went horribly wrong in gen 3 for me though, like they tried to squish everything in smaller while trying to maintain every little detail.
