Some stick around like Charizard and Lucario. It really depends on how popular the Pokemon ends up being outside of Gamefreak pushing it.
I'm not particularly fond of Charizard, always been a Venusaur fan, but attributing purely to Gamefreaks bias is unfair. It's a well-designed creature with lot's of fans, and has enough appeal that non-fans recognize and like it. Of course Gamefreak will continue to push it.
