The manga itself, although based on the games, has a much better and interesting plot than the series featuring Satoshi. And not for the dumb bullshit like "omg arbok cut in half by charmeleon" or "legendary birds combined!" (all of that was before Pokemon established a more solid canon, so they're about as strange as Geodude looking like a Guido in RGB.)
