The game was actually pretty entertaining when it wasn't focusing on the tournaments.
Visuals looked pretty good in some areas, and generally not BAD in the worst areas iirc.
Music was also pretty decent.
The more fleshed out sidequests were pretty good.

The 'Ghost types are le illegal' shit was really dumb. All we're really shown is that the leaderfaggot ate shit vs the dragonfag in a 1v1, and this apparently caused the region to ban ALL ghost types??? I get that we're told that the cult is le bad and did bad shit, but you barely, if ever see that, and even then, what does it have to do with ghost types? This could've just as easily been literally any other type in the game because it's based on the cultfaggots' actions themselves rather than, say, the cultfaggots using ghosts to steal souls for Giratina or some shit, which would've made this slightly more believable.
The tournaments are 100% the weakest part of the game's story. The game was so much more entertaining when I was doing anything else.
I can understand the lack of qol thanks to old essentials generally not having much in that department, but that doesn't mean that I can look past it, especially when combined with below.

Playability is REALLY bad. The game is just so goddamn slow without speedup. I feel like both Bunken and I probably would've dropped this if I didn't fix it. I'll cut the dev a very small amount of slack, since this is pretty fucking old, but man, this is my biggest complaint about the game, and if I didn't fix it, I don't think I would've made it past the first couple of tournaments desu. Not helped by speedup being locked to debug.
Overall, it's not a BAD game, but it's definitely dated. I can't say I'd recommend it thanks to the usual old essentials shit performance, but if you can get past that (or mod it), you probably won't have a TERRIBLE time, compared to some of the shittier games we've done.
