It feels to me like if they gave them a pre-evo and were available in the wild, they would pass as regular pokemon. Making them mythicals is a forced mean to make them more popular, by artificially boosting their rarity and strength. Diancie could've easily been related to the carbink line, marshadow could just have been a regular ghost pokemon, zarude is just a simian. It seems that in nu games, if pokemon like lucario or golurk were to be introduced now, they would not give them pre-evos and just make them gift mythicals. Even if you like mythical pokemon, you have to agree this sucks, because when you play the game, a pokemon that could have easily been one of your favorite partners, is taken away from you, just to be relegated to advertisement for movies/events.
