OP Here. I think that the question I'm having is "What makes a character a good champion?" I often compare Leon's role in Swsh to Zero's role in Mega Man X, being this big brother character that you look up to and use that as a motivation for the game. Other champions fit a similar role, and they don't really differ much from Leon in that sense. The only difference I see is that they immediately say that Leon is champion while for the others it's never said until you get to them. And like other champions, he goes out and helps the player in doing what they need to do, for example him helping the player stop Eternatus the same way Cynthia helps the player with Giratina. Despite what I said in the first post, I do actually enjoy Leon as a character. With that being said, when being asked "Who's your favorite Champion" I never think of Leon, and when the anime says he's the number 1 trainer, I find it very difficult to believe. Idk why people here think it's because he doesn't use competitively viable Pokemon, that shit doesn't matter in single player. It could be that the other champions are more difficult, but Leon's a relatively hard fight too. I just don't know why he doesn't give me the same "Champion" feeling that Cynthia, Steven, or even Iris give off, despite him fufilling a nearly identical role within the game's narrative.
