All sorts of aspects of the free love movement promoted that. Conveniently that ties into the point about individualism–what we've found in recent history is that society has become strong enough that we no longer need to be especially homogenous in order to be safe. Homogeneity as an evolutionary mechanism exists because being different from societal norms was dangerous to society and therefore society by necessity needed to be hostile to you. That is largely not the case anymore, first worlders generally are not worried about being killed by their neighbors (yes, crime stats in the first world are historically low, even among populations existing in relative poverty).
