Here's a comparison between other game environments on the Nintendo Switch that have great art direction compared to Sword and Shield.
Yes, all of these images are from the Switch, including the DQ11 image. Too give Sword and Shield a better chance for the comparison, I specifically cherry-picked high-res images that show off the game's environments at its the best quality possible, because there are plenty of bad images.
These images show that Sword and Shield lacking heavily in resolution, lighting, vibrance, scale, and just general details that the other games have with their environments.

I specifically chose images that showed off the environment. Yeah, it's easy to pick a image that shows a close up of a high-poly model and say the game looks amazing but that applies to every game, which makes the comparison unfair.
If the comparison shows anything, it's that Game Freak is clearly not ready for AAA releases and needs to either expand their studio or get some help from Nintendo. For the world's biggest franchise, it's surprising that making compromises and cutting corners like this is somehow acceptable.
Do the games look genuinely bad? I don't think so, but I do think they just look 'ok". And again, I don't think the world's biggest franchise should settle with "just ok".
