Mario has its core gameplay perfected so anything new added will simply add to the gameplay whereas pokemon has been making several changes in the dumbest way possible while removing fluff features because they were too stupid to actually take the sheer number of pokemon into consideration when programming them.
People are mad at pokemon for lying about why they remover pokemon, for not at all delivering on their promises for better animations, and for removing features that either made the game easier or engrossed the player more with the world of pokemon
If gamefreak perfected their formula then we'd be fine if they made every region different because then we'd have something to fall back on if the new regional gimmick was shit
