Let me tell you something about my Furret, Engie. He was the biggest bro on my team. Not only did he pull double duty as the most-used HM slave (Strength and Surf), he also helped me out during the beginning of the game and towards the end.
Being the first Pokémon I caught and the first to evolve fully, he helped immensely with some of the earlier gyms. Teaching him Headbutt and giving him a Silk Scarf, he could OHKO a lot of things I went up against.
It was right around the 6th or 7th Johto gym that he started to lose his power. Things were fully evolved more often, and he just couldn't measure up.
It was only when he learned the god-tier combo of Amnesia and Baton Pass that he came back to the fore. With him in the first slot, he and Babe swept Sabrina and Misty aside.
Sadly I tried that strategy with Erika and, well, the rest is history.
