So I finally got around to watching the new episode, and to be honest I wasn't impressed. It was an episode carried by the nostalgia of seeing reserves and the cuteness of it all, but it lacked emotional and plot substance. Did I smile seeing all of Ash's old pokemon, and them training together? of course. But there was nothing that really got me excited, made me feel like something was happening. Not to mention the odd writing choices like having Gengar learn Will-O-Wisp without Ash even being there, or Paul saying "I'm not into festivals", as if that's an actual answer to the question why he's not in the PWC. It all just felt "Safe". This was the safest way to play out a Paul return, and that's certainly not a compliment.
