Crystal was the best single installment in pokemons history. Granted, it doesn't have any endgame, and the competitive meta is fucked.
Gen2 has the best replayability, with its simplicity and freedom being it's success. Progression, while linear, still gives room for multiple routes. The roster of pokemon is genuinely enjoyable, and the daycare breeding can give most pokemon very competent move sets. (pic related; my most recent play thru team)
The sprites in crystal are beautiful (if we can ignore golems back sprite for the moment).
The music is incredible (exhibit a: viridian forest in route 2)
