The anime lost it's soul when it went full digital. AG-BW is probably the most sterile, formulaic and lifeless the anime has ever been and people only like them because that's what the majority of this board, full of 18-25 year olds, grew up on.
XY was shit for gunning for the shonen audience, and now there's an entire section of people who unironically self inserted as Ash and will seethe about Alain till the end of time, worst fanbase by far.
SM is when the anime got it's soul back much to the chagrin of the DP/XY "ash is a super edgy badass" fanbase. JN was okay but still above gens 3-5.
Lastly and most importantly, OG was only good because of the dub, the anime in JP loses a lot of its charm and exposes it for what it really is, a long commercial only memorable because it was in place before all the corporation mandates reined the writers in.
