It's a Pokemon with great design, an orange dragon with horns and flame on it's tail that indicates its health. That alone makes it better than 90% of other Pokemon, since some thought was put into it's design. The details are a bit lacking, but that's better than over detailing. The biggest flaw would be that it looks slightly fat, but so did most of the other Kanto Pokemon, so I can excuse that.
It was bad competitively, but GF retconned that wonderfully with its Mega forms. Charizard also got the Dragon-type some fans wanted. Charizard can function well as both a Physical Attacker and a Special Attacker.
The only people who dislike Charizard are either edgy teenagers who thinks only kids can like dragons or butthurt kids who think that it's somehow Charizard's fault that their favorite Pokemon doesn't get enough attention.
