Despite the fact that I don't want to be trite, I have to say dragon as to say anything else is tantamount to betraying an entire team of my favorites.

Off the top of my head, it would be designed similar to a Hydra insofar as there is a starting point that fans out into multiple pathways one can take to get to the gym leader. All of these pathways need to be "cauterized" before the the final chamber opens and the final "head," the gym leader, can be battled.

Mostly see above. Inspired by Euro folklore, I would like to add a test of character as well. At the end of every pathway, there lies a gold nugget on an altar that you're free to take; however, some cryptic phrase told by the bouncer at the front will allude to the fact that only the pure of heart can best the dragon and, as such, if you take the gold, the gym resets before you get to the leader.
