This also explains why SwSh is so visually limited. They work way in advance, and were hesitant to support the switch near release when they weren't sure how popular it would be (it's cheaper and easier for them to just stick with 3DS so they bet on it). They likely got the majority of the way through development of the Galar games and did a "last minute" port/upscale to switch in the last 12-18 months. They're notoriously bad on hardware they're unfamiliar with (look at DP), and the porting probably ate into the time they originally designated for adding the rest of the pokemon. They might've even wanted to add all 18 gyms at one point. This is SM upscaled in an emulator for a graphical comparison.

All it takes is not being a brainlet. All the models have way more polygons than they need, you just can't tell on the 3DS. That's why the game lags like shit in double battles and battle royals. Emulators like Citra show how the models really look.

A Switch port of SM would look like it does on an emulator.
In fact, I would have easily bought USUM had it been for the Switch, if only for the enhanced graphics despite the minor differences in the actual gameplay.

3DS can barely run Sun/Moon as it is, plus they removed nearly all required second screen features and they have every model ready to go for following Pokemon,
The initial Eurogamer leak said that it was developed with the Switch in mind

Plus the games as they are now look amazing upscaled
