In fact I already played many games with areas just like that and none of them were the focal point of the game or used to excuse insubstantial content in other areas, as people are prone to do with SWSH.

Similarly, play B2W2, HGSS, Platinum, Or Emerald and then compare their vast amount of routes, secrets, side areas, and even Dex size to SWSH. It's also pathetic.
So, they should have used development resources entirely on making the game open or entirely on having good routes and traditional content, instead of half-assing both.
