GO already uses the 3DS models with a different shader and they look great. GF definitely future-proofed these for further games.
They could probably use some updated textures, though. The existing ones look pretty flat and have hard lines detailing features, which clashes a bit with a smooth shader. They don't need to go full bumpmap fur detail like Pokken did, just a bit of a style upgrade to fit an HD style.
