From what I got from the constant cries of NEVEREVER from dataminers (goddamn that month or so between the datamine and release was just awful) it's 100% absolutely impossible under any circumstance whatsoever to add new items to the game, which was why there couldn't be any new Megastones.

Said Gym Leader, Ritch, uses Ground-types and has Lv. 14 Rhyhorn and Lv. 16 Sandshrew. Sandshrew gets a lucky crit on Bulbasaur and almost takes out Eevee, but we succeed and get the TM for Dig.
Notably, we DON'T get a badge for beating him, in fact it seems the badge screen has been removed from the trainer screen. There is, however, a "sidequests" bar, I assume more major sidequests than the little ones like helping a little girl get home for Running Shoes.
