I think I will also explain the system in my region too. There's actually a mix of trials and gyms. Defeating trials will give you something called patches, and gyms gift you regular gym badges. In my head, I have it planned where you have to defeat the trial Pokemon before you can challenge the gym. Trial challenges will probably have to be static encounters. There are 4 trials and 4 gyms.
Finally there's this kind of exam thing that plays like a battle tower/tree guantlet that tests to see whether or not you can battle the Pokemon League. Last fight is pretty much a glorified gym fight with the exam master. Where they give you the final badge. Pic related is basically a trial captain, but you can battle them once the trial is completed.
After all of that i's the standard Elite 4 than Champion.
