By writing a story where it's even possible for a protag to become the best in the first year as a trainer, you're putting a cap of how seriously the story can be taken and, in a way, diminishing the entire premise of pokemon training within your setting. It means the team has grown to the highest strength possible in that short time, that the MC learns and implements strategy to the same level as champions in their first season. It's something for a kids movie - like a first time little league coach taking their kids to win MLB in their first year.
So it wouldn't be believable, but that doesn't necessarily mean it would be bad. A lot of media is fundamentally unbelievable and succeeds by being compelling in other aspects.
