I know anecdotal evidence doesn't count for much, but my brother is a die-hard Genwunner, and even he liked Greninja so much he was willing to try the new games out. I'm sure you've seen those +8 Million vote Gen VI polls that came out 5 Months before the Smash announcement, so there's no point in me looking for them. Greninja was hella popular, but Smash marked the difference between popular and flat-out superstar.
