The reason for Genwunning isn't the games being good, it was the anime being an amazing adaption of primitive source material that was enjoyable globally. Meanwhile the games would begin to get better at the expense of becoming much more split with the fanbase the anime would only get worse without him and continue to decline a slow, arduous, painful death of irrelevancy to the point the games were promoting the anime instead of vice versa
By the point of Journeys the anime was more of a detriment than it was an asset when that was objectively the inverse in the early 2000s
