For all we know, he probably didn't even have Charmander and the reason it was shown was to draw parallels between Red and Giovanni.

>>45949414I agree, unfortunately, that's exactly how bad the writing in the game was though so I think it's a welcome addition to try and make sense of how out of character it was for him. Just self insert Squirtle if you started with it or Bulbasaur if you did that. Red started with Charmander in Origins so those are the animations they re-used; we know it's no different in the games even if you defeat him having chosen another starter.
Anyway pic related, this is the same tactic other animes use and it's just as lazy if not even more.
