Wordcount is important depending on how much of a novel you want the story to feel like. Writing a 20k chapter makes for a different impression than a 4k one, but the general outline should be similar - Aristotle's dramatic structure is important to at least consider if you seriously want to hold attention through all those sentences. And it has also helped me to follow a patern while maintaining reader interest in an ongoing series.
