the actual problem with newer games is streamlining and removal of potentially confusing features, unless it's a one-off gimmick for evolution or whatever, and instead moving back towards the pure competitive crowd (like how everything is based around producing a perfect Pokémon or whatever)
obviously the most obvious example is the removal of the Battle Frontier for streamlining, but you can notice it as well by seeing how regions have generally gone from potentially branching paths with dungeons, disorientating layouts and content to come back for compared to say, Kalos and Alola which generally speaking move in a straight path with the dungeons being relegated to post-game Legendary hunting and having no real point for field obstacles
