He and Blue would show up when your weren't expecting it and try, earnestly to wreck your shit. You beat then and they still act haughty and smug in a way that made you hate them. It made defeating Blue as the champion icing on the cake and defeating Silver a character moment as he questioned his whole life.
Now it's "your friendly rival". It's like the didn't want kids to feel a negative emotion even if it served the story.
The journey to being the best involves competing with people who would rather you fail.
Even the fucking anime got that right.
