To be honest though I was thinking of narrowing it down to Aomori specifically and just say that it's in the same vague middle of nowhere between Johto and Sinnoh as the Sinjoh Ruins, and no one has ever heard of it because there aren't enough people there to sustain a pokemon league lol

Pokemon is pretty friendly to anachronisms, plus I feel like the tradition might have survived into the modern age if there were as many ghosts with insane powers wandering around as there are in the Pokemon world.
