He's not going to see Pokémon through the lens of someone who expects the series to match the production values of other AAA games or someone who wants all the features and 898 entries in the latest game or higher.
It's easier to find faults in games people can pick-up and play, find broken and unfair off the bat than to play a game for 30-50 hours, complain about missing or inconsistent features that only break the series from a subjective standpoint that assumes you played every game religiously.
Pokémon can be seen as a disappointing series depending on who you ask, but that doesn't mean it's a shitty game. It's a mid-tier game with flaws at its worst.
