>>45873848I love N but if you actually go back and read Black and White, you'll realize that he's written slightly differently in every scene to the point where he comes off as schizophrenic. It's more noticeable in the original script because the English translators did a decent job of trying to make this fucker be semi-coherent, but the more I play the more it bothers me. I blame the rewrites that happened when Game Freak decided to change the nature of his supernatural powers. A lot of people think of N as overly idealistic or outright delusional, but if you don't get confused by the translation and take certain claims he makes as completely literal you'll start to realize N had a solid reason for some of the weirder leaps of logic he makes. For example, his sudden fixation with the protagonist after battling them in Nimbasa only really makes sense in the context of his original ability. Same as to why he's so sure the protagonist will summon Zekrom/Reshiram.
In retrospect, I think there were a lot of cool ideas for N that didn't really come across effectively. Once I knew what to look for, I had no choice but to admit that my favorite Pokemon character in my favorite Pokemon games ended up as a confusing mess because of a sloppy rewrite.
It took until B2W2 and beyond to really nail down N's character as a mostly well meaning animal rights dude completely defined by his ability to speak to Pokemon. I'm happy with N as he is now but I'm always fascinated by the jankiness of Gen 5's prototypes and pray that the based leaker gives us all access to whatever Gen 5 content they're hoarding someday soon.
In the end, the most important thing to know is that N is Masuda's self insert and his autism is a treasure.
