Everyone wanted Ash to finally win. After all that build-up, having him lose? They alienated a ton of people who'd have kept watching the anime, af.least sporadically. Even on /vp/ you can distinctly feel the shift from positive to negative thoughts about the anime. SM could have had its cake and eat it too. Aim for a younger audience while keeping many older fans interested in the aftermath of Ash's development. Now... they only have the little kids. Everyone else lost interest.
