There's nothing wrong with Mantine's concept, the problem is the execution. It just looks so... flat. That's a problem I have with a lot of Gen II. It's like they left Keiji Kinebuchi in charge of designing Pokemon for a month and he just churned out things were stupid-easy to model.
I've included an example of Keiji Kinebuchi's artwork just in case you're too young to have owned any of the cards he illustrated. It's all painfully basic CGI, and he never tried to get better at it before he stopped working on the Pokemon TCG altogether.
