You fuckers are a bunch of apologists, you know that?
I ranted a few weeks ago about how much I hated a particular part of XY - the segment with Parfum Palace, just before Snorlax, where you have to get the Wand of Gen 1 Nostalgia to advance the plot. Kinda wish I'd capped it so I could repost it here. The gist of it is that you waste your time interacting with NPCs, reading dialogue, solving the world's shittiest puzzle, exploring empty areas, and it all leads up to a horribly anticlimactic throwback to Gen I.
Today, let me instead talk about the climax of XY.
>beat Forgettable Gym #7
>cell phone (or whatever) beeps, it's an announcement from World's Worst Philosophy Major
>"I'm going to destroy the planet now, so rip in pieces everyone"
>Least Annoying Rival shows up out of nowhere
>"I'm somewhat alarmed by this announcement, I wonder if we should go to Annoying Circular Town to advance the plot"
>also you can't go south because the Arbitrary Standing Around Crew is back at it again, despite there being nothing to lose by allowing the player to go south
>you go back to Circular Town and enter the Ugly Red Suits Café
>Philosophy Major tells you that he's destroying the world because he doesn't like it
>starts crying at one point
I remember that that, in particular, elicited a giant "oh, fuck youuuu" from me.
>after this, there's some more battling, then more dialogue from the World-Destroying Ugly Red Suits
>at some point, after watching another stupid cutscene, you have to go to Most Forgettable Town In A Region Full Of Forgettable Towns to advance the plot
>you also find, in a jail cell, Mysterious Character With A Backstory who tells you about his backstory
(Can't remember if that's in Circular Town or Forgettable Town.)
>as you head down the corridor to the final room, Least Annoying Rival gives insightful criticism of Philosophy Major's approach to solving the world's problems
