As Slowpokes have finally come to the realization that survival is imperative, they have undergone a bizarre evolution- by allowing Shellders to clamp on their spines, the Pokemon's natural toxin seeps through Slowpoke's spinal cord, causing the two Pokemon to merge into an impenetrable, turtle like Pokemon. However, the result of this is that Slowpoke becomes nearly paralyzed in its limbs. This Pokemon drifts along the sea floor, using its tail as a rudder and bashing into opponents.
As for The Beartrap, I wanted the idea of a marking on its stomach that looked friendly when it lays down, and enticed Pokemon closer.
