Sonic games have pretty much had a Green Hill Recolor Zone as a starting level.
And they always have that same checkered grass, usually by the ocean with a waterfall and water segment.
It's definitely not like this is a new thing to Sonic because the first levels of 2, 3 and CD (even other Classic games like 3D Blast). You'd be hardpress to find like 5-10 Sonic games that don't do this.
But it's not like this is something that only happens in just these two series. Even Mario can't not call back to the opening segment of 1-1 either. Longrunning series and franchises always call back to the first entry. Some have done it since their birth. Doesn't mean it doesn't get annoying, though.
