"gull-pi-n"
Gull refers to birds. Seagulls, whatever kind of gull. Gulpin itself is first encountered in Hoenn near Wingulls.
pi is an irrational constant, and also the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Gulpin from a 2D perspective is very much so circular.
-n ties in with the previous point, in that Gulpin is a 3D shape (due to its introduction in the third generation) and so would include "n" amount of circles stacked on top of each other to produce Gulpin's ultimately spherical shape.
