I fucking love Pokemon, I loved Gen 6 despite its flaws, I loved the original SM and had even more fun with USUM, I watch the anime and adore it, basically I'll put up with any shit this franchise dumps on us, but the original BW games just didn't do it for me. Those and ORAS are the only games that I didn't finish right as they came out, but instead put down for months and came back to later because they didn't hold my attention.
This is all my opinion and don't fault anyone for loving gen 5, but right from the get go, the very first thing that was supposed to draw me into the region (the starters) were bland. I was on /vp/ during the Gen 5 leak season, and I ADORED the original Dewott design leak and thought "this is going to be my new all time favourite pokemon when it evolves", but all of the starters let me down after their full evolution lines were leaked. The early Pokemon in the region were uninspired at best, Pidove, Patrat, those stupid elemental monkeys, there was nothing that I really WANTED to use but just had to begrudgingly use anyway (I think I ended up just using a Purrloin). Moving on from there, we get the Pokemon that were supposed to mirror a lot of the standard mons in Gen 1, Roggenrola = Geodude, Woobat = Zubat, Drilbur = Sandshrew, I could go through the list of the whole dex and for a lot of them point out how imo they were supposed to kind of revitalise the older gen 1 designs with similar concepts, but for me almost all of them failed at actually being more interesting. Some of the other Pokemon in the dex come down to preference, I can admit the Venipede line, Sandile line etc. are pretty cool, but I just didn't fall in love with any of them. One thing I loved about the dex though was the "end-game" Pokemon like Braviary, Bisharp, the Dragons etc, but they fucked up and made it so difficult to evolve them that they weren't even effective for the actual main part of the story.
I could blogpost about Gen 5 forever but I'm out of space.
