Also, market research has consistently shown that children respond positively to non-humanoid monsters that become progressively more humanlike as they evolve (COUGH digimon COUGH) so it was a logical direction for the series to go in.
desu I think the best humanoid pokemon are the ones that are based on actual cryptids (and yokai etc.) like Froslass, which is a yuki-onna, and Gothitelle, which seems to be based on the Flatwoods monster.
