Can someone please teach my dumbass son, Ash, how to have even the slightest game? When a girl thanks you for doing her a favor, the correct answer is NOT to say you only did it because someone told you to.
This is also the episode where they discover the origin of Dawn's nickname from Kenny, "Dee Dee" or "Pikari." It makes a lot of sense, even if it's a bit lame, in the Japanese (she got shocked by Plusle in Minun, making her hair sparkly "pikapika" so "Pikari." It makes less sense in English, but the dubbers obviously had to bend a bit to make it work (Kenny calls her hair "diamond dandruff," which gets shortened to "DD," or "Dee Dee." I doubt anyone in Japan clued them in to what the punchline of the "Dee Dee" gag was going to end up being.
Now the thing about all that is, back in the late 2000s, Carlos Mencia was still popular and not really outed as a jokestealer yet, and he had a bit where he'd call people retarded and punctuate it by shouting "DEEDEEDEE." It's great, look it up. But anyway, in English, I couldn't help but think that Kenny was calling Dawn retarded, and given the timeframe these episodes came out, I'm sure a few of the older teenage watchers of Pokemon made the same connection. Poor Dawn. She was traumatized by being shocked by Plusle and Minun, then called a retard for it the rest of her childhood. Fuck Kenny.
