>>34381432The stories are too simplistic. Like a lot of GF's work, there are hints of greatness there, but it's usually wasted. The main flaw of Gen VII's story is that it heavily relied on you liking its characters, especially Lillie.
I've heard a lot of people say that it's refreshing to have a character that doesn't battle, but unfortunately, that doesn't work in the Pokemon world. For twenty years, it's been implied that getting your first Pokemon and going on a journey was a sign of growing up and gaining some independence. Lillie's refusal to battle, in spite that she knows that her and Nebby are in danger, just make her irresponsible. The game handwaves this away, and they continue to push her onto you so you can protect her. The story is essentially an hours long escort mission with the escort just running headlong into situations she has no way of handling.
It's nice that GF has been branching out in recent gens to give Pokemon more of a story than just "world is going to end, go stop it," but they need to either hire better writers or take more time and care into writing them. Pokemon as a game is lucky because it doesn't really need a story. Give people a new location with many hidden nooks and crannies, plenty of new Pokemon along with some old, stuff to do with those Pokemon, and they can make amazing memories on their own. The story should just be the icing on this cake to further entice you. But what good is it to bring the Pokemon world to life with a story, at the cost of actually spending time with your Pokemon?
