i remember finally getting to it in Emerald as a kid and just being totally baffled by how rigid, tedious, and demanding it was in comparison to the mainline game. from the ridiculous grind of shitmon rounds, the ludicrous BP prices of items/moves, and even down to all the battle NPCs having bizzare, seemingly randomly-generated all-caps dialouge - it was very clinical and naturally unfun.
basically, game freak design features poorly, but assume the problem is just Kids These Days and then toss out content wholesale
