Guys, I figured it out, I fucking figured it out!
Everybody knows that Azumarill sucks, but few people know WHY it sucks. Most people see the 'all rounder' tag and try to play him like garchomp/tsareena.
Hell, even his abilities are made to confuse you into thinking he is some kind of high damage, high burst criting bruiser, but that's not what Azumaril is made for.
Azumaril cannot hope to match other all-rounders/attackers/speedsters in either DPS nor burst damage so we're not gonna try to. What it CAN do however is out outsustain them. I've gone head to head with Cinderaces, Tsareenas, and Dragonites and came out on top with this one simple trick.
First of all, you need to pick Water Pulse and Whirlpool. I like the idea of aqua tail but it cannot match whirlpool in neither healing nor damage; as for play rough it's just bad both in concept and execution.
Next, lets talk items. Score Shield, Buddy Barrier, and Aeos Cookie; no really, stay with me here I know how it sounds. You want the most health you can muster as increasing Azurils damage is next to impossible due to how its critical hits work and how it's entire kit is based around the notion of critting constantly. Seriously they must have been afraid of making it too OP and so they undertuned it big time, but I digress.
Most of you must have figured it out by now: we are going for the biggest shield you can muster by increasing your health and by extension the shield you get with buddy barrier. That item synergizes well with Azumarills Unite move for a total of 40% of you max HP as a shield which translates to 4k shield making you tankier than some of the tanks in game, IN ADDITION to getting healed by whirlpool which does a suprising ammount of healing.
Weakness policy can be used in place of score shield for that extra 12% damage at the cost of 300 hp, however it becomes so much harder to stack your Aeos Cookie so pick it at your own risk.
