Started playing Gen 1 on PC emulator around year 7, english wasn't our first language so we beat the game with our overlevelled Charizard and whatever knowledge I had picked up from the anime.
Gen 2 was also emulated on PC. Knew more english at this point and genuinely the first real Pokémon experience. Can't recall if internet databases were established at that time or if I just wanted to learn things on my own, but I recall levelling everything up on my own to see what they'd turn into. Magcargo and Tyranitar are two of my faves to this day as a result.
Gen 3 was the first game we bought. Hoenn was definitely a good time due to.all the areas to explore, particularly the Regi trio, and getting to replay Gen 1 felt like a good way to apologize for emulating at the outset.
I almost ruined my Gen 4 playthrough since I had looked up what Pokémon I wanted beforehand and following a list or databases really made exploration a hassle since I kept spoiling myself. Once I started going in blind again I could start enjoying myself again. Phys/special split was also a highly wanted feature of mine since Gen 2.
Gen 5 revived my interest in the franchise. Felt as exciting as Gen 1 and 2 since I had avoided most leaks like the plague, and I've been chasing that high since.
Gen 6 forward was the beginning of the end and I've symbolically buried my connection with the franchise since Gen 8.
