You know what's strange? If you look at the technicality pokemon is a turn based jrpg where most of the time you fight one on one while playing along a boring story. Think about it, take any final fantasy and remove all the team members on your and enemy's team except for one. That's pokemon (except for occasional 2v2). What's making up for that is the fact that you have hundreds of team members to choose from but they have no backstories, no dialogues and no unique mechanics to differentiate them from each other. To me the gameplay is simply dogshit and being able to form a unique team just doesn't make up for that.
