I created GTS Giveaway threads and the Luvdisc method.
When gen 6 came out, nearly 10 years ago, I traded my Zapdos for a Porygon, which was only obtainable through PokéBank.
I started breeding them and giving them away on /vp/, by asking people to name their Luvdiscs "VP" and putting them up on GTS for Porygons. More anons started jumping in on the the thread with other rare Pokémon.
Other anons kept the threads running, at first they were called "Christmas Luvdiscs"/"New Years Luvdiscs", eventually became GTS Giveaway threads after the holiday season was over.
