I think she was originally intended to be Ash's Love Interest back when only Gens 1 and 2 were going on since supposedly the franchise was originally intended to end with Gen 2
(Please correct me if I'm wrong on this)
Obviously times have changed since then and the Writers have pretty much drop any shop tease she originally had with Ashh so I just thought calling Misty Ash's "Ex-Girlfriend" seemed somewhat fitting in that context
