Pokemon hasn't changed. It's just added stuff. Each gen has its good designs and its bad designs. The games all play fundamentally the same for each gen, with features and mechanics making or breaking a "good" entry.
Pokemon's barely kept up with technological advancements, but it's essentially unchanged. You can have a favorite, but the quality per entry is mostly subjective.
