In the game, the grunts are appearing at random stops and challenge you to a fight if you look at or spin the stop (random as to whether they let you spin it or not once before attacking). They have shadow Pokemon and if you beat them you get a chance to catch the shadow Pokemon and later purify it like how it worked in the gamecube games.
