Every Pokemon game has its own ups and downs. The games you consider "shit" have their own advantages that appeal to another person. For example, Gen IV has the Underground, Pokeathlon, and Contests to allow for a varied and unique local multiplayer experience. Gen V has PWT and the White Treehollow along with the typical Battle Tower type facility, so you get plenty of mileage in terms of single player battling. Gen VI's PSS system and advancements in breeding, egg moves and all that allow for it to be a very accessible online game, creating a community and making it much easier to battle randomly with anyone at any time.
That said, third versions and remakes are overall improvements when compared to the games they are based off of, despite some of them introducing their own flaws.
