It was not a tropical fairy theme, it was just a humanoid butterfly. The original artist thought making something that wasn't "strictly a butterfly" was a good direction, but it very, very clearly was not. After some discussion, the original artist took suggestions and made the best version, the Bird-Wing Butterfly. It had massive wings and was designed to have high hp/defense. The wings are supposed to be exaggeratedly huge.
